Why I’m Not the First Developer You Contact — And Why That’s a Good Thing

We’ve all seen the ads:
“Build your own website for just $30/month!”
It sounds like a no-brainer, especially for a small business trying to keep costs low. A professional-looking website, for the price of a pizza night? Who wouldn’t want that?

I get it. Really, I do.

When you’re running a small business, you’re wearing a dozen hats and trying to make smart choices with your budget. So when someone promises an “easy button” to build your own website and be up and running in a day, it’s incredibly tempting to jump in headfirst.

But here’s the thing: I’ve been doing this for almost 20 years, and what I do looks easy only because I’ve spent years learning and still continue to learn more everyday. I try to keep all the technical jargon away from you as much as I can so you can run your business and not have to worry about it.

There’s a difference between having a website and having a website that works. One that builds trust, brings in business, loads quickly, works on mobile, shows up in search results, and doesn’t break everytime something is changed, stays up to date and secure. Those little details—security, SEO, load speed, conversion optimization—are often missing or lacking from the $30 website-in-a-box services or the low-cost freelancer who says they know what they’re doing, but first time something goes wrong and breaks or site is breached, that’s when you question their skills.

That’s why, when a new potential client approaches me, I prefer to be the one they contacted after they experience other options.

My favorite clients are the ones who’ve already tried doing it themselves. They’ve tried the budget services and found them limited. They hired someone cheap and ended up with a site that breaks or the freelancer disappears. They’ve seen what happens when corners get cut.

By the time they call me, they get it—not because I told them, but because they’ve lived it. And those are the clients who are still with me years later.

They value what I bring to the table because they’ve seen the difference firsthand.

So if you’re in the “I’ll just do it myself” phase, go for it. Honestly. It’s a good way to learn what’s really involved. And when you’re ready for something that actually grows with your business and doesn’t fall apart when you need it most—that’s when I’m ready too.

And I’ll be here to clean up the mess, fix what’s broken, and build something that finally works the way you always hoped it would.
